About Ilza Nogueira
Ilza Nogueira was born in Salvador, a city in Bahia, Brazil. She loved music from a young age. She studied how to compose music at the Federal University of Bahia. Her teacher there was Ernst Widmer.
After she finished her studies in 1972, she won a special scholarship. This allowed her to continue learning about composition in Cologne, Germany. There, she studied with another famous composer, Mauricio Kagel.
Later, Ilza Nogueira moved to the United States. She earned two more advanced degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo. During this time, she learned from important composers like Lejaren Hiller and Morton Feldman.
After all her studies, she returned to Brazil. She became a music teacher at the Federal University of Paraíba. She taught there until she retired in 1998.
