Reporting on Important Issues
In March 2006, while working on De Facto, Ilze Jaunalksne reported on a very important story. She uncovered information about some political leaders in Latvia. These leaders were involved in unfair actions related to voting.
Her reporting was so impactful that it led to a government minister leaving their job. It also caused some other high-ranking political figures to face serious questions about their actions.
Standing Up for Privacy
Because of her important reporting, Ilze faced a difficult situation. Her private phone calls were secretly listened to. Then, what she said in these calls was shared with the public by people who disagreed with her. This was a big invasion of her privacy.
Ilze decided to take action against this unfair treatment. She went to court to protect her good name and privacy. This was the first time such a case happened in Latvia. She won her case!
The court ordered the Latvian Financial Police to pay her money for illegally recording her calls. The Finance Ministry and State Revenue Service were also found guilty of invading her privacy. This showed that even important government groups must respect people's privacy.
