Becoming Alphacat: YouTube and Obama Impressions

Iman Crosson started his YouTube channel, Alphacat, on December 14, 2005, when he was 23 years old. In 2008, his friends at work encouraged him to make funny videos pretending to be Barack Obama. At that time, Obama was running to become the U.S. President.

He said that he "went from unemployed to self-employed" very quickly. After this, Crosson moved from New York to California. He got an agent to help him move from online videos to bigger shows. He was even invited to be on America's Got Talent.

On YouTube, Alphacat became known for mixing his Obama impressions with popular hip-hop songs. His funny versions of Beyoncé's "Single Ladies" and T.I.'s "Whatever I Like" were each watched over 20 million times!

After Obama became President in January 2009, Crosson was featured on many TV shows, news programs, and in newspapers. Fox News even called him a "YouTube sensation."

Crosson also did voice-overs for Newsweek's The District. This was a video series where he narrated Obama's first months in Washington from the President's point of view. He also impersonated Obama at a big dinner for news reporters in March 2010.
