Imilce, also known as Himilce, was an important woman from ancient Iberia. She was married to the famous general Hannibal Barca. Many old history books mention her.
Who Was Imilce?
Imilce was from Castulo, a strong city in ancient Iberia. This city was a friend and ally of Carthage. Carthage was a powerful ancient city in North Africa.
The Roman historian Livy wrote that Hannibal married a woman from Castulo. A Roman poet named Silius Italicus later said this woman was Imilce.
Imilce's Family and Son
Some historians believe Imilce might have had a son with Hannibal. The son's name is thought to have been Haspar or Aspar. However, other ancient writers like Livy and Polybius do not mention this son.
During the Punic Wars, a big conflict between Rome and Carthage, Hannibal reportedly sent Imilce and their son back to Carthage. He did this to keep them safe from the fighting. Some modern historians wonder if this story is entirely true. They think it might be similar to other stories from that time.
Cultural Depictions
Imilce is honored in the city of Baeza, in Andalusia, Spain. There is a statue of her there. This statue is part of a famous fountain called Fuente de Los Leones, which means Fountain of the Lions.
