The Imishli District (Azerbaijani: İmişli rayonu) is one of Azerbaijan's 66 districts. It is located in the central part of the country. This district is part of the Central Aran Economic Region.
Imishli District shares borders with several other districts. These include Beylagan, Zardab, Kurdamir, Sabirabad, Saatly, and Bilasuvar. It also borders the Ardabil Province of Iran. The main city and capital of the district is Imishli. In 2020, about 158,682 people lived in the district.

Geography of Imishli
Most of the Imishli District is made up of lowlands. Some parts of the land are even below sea level. The Kura River forms the northern edge of the district. The Aras River flows through the middle and forms part of the southern border.
The soil in the district is mostly grey. Imishli has natural resources like oil, gas, and sand-gravel.
Climate and Weather
The climate here is usually mild and warm. It is also quite dry, like a desert. In January, the average temperature is around 1.6 degrees Celsius. In July, it goes up to about 26.1 degrees Celsius. The district gets about 300 millimeters of rain each year.
Plants and Animals
The main plants found here are types that grow in semi-desert areas. These include wormwood and saline plants. There are also forests with trees like poplars, cypresses, and mulberries. You can also find pomegranates and rose hips.
The area has many different kinds of animals. You might see wild boars, wolves, and common foxes. Grey rabbits and gazelles also live here. Smaller animals like gums are common. For birds, there are pheasants, larvae, hawks, and doves.
Lake Sarysu
Sarysu is Azerbaijan's largest natural lake. Most of this lake is located within the Imishli District. A smaller part of it extends into the nearby Sabirabad District.
Education and Culture
The Public Education Department in Imishli District started in 1942. It helps manage schools in the area. Today, the Imishli District Education Department oversees 62 general education schools. This includes full-time schools, secondary schools, and primary schools. There are also two places for out-of-school activities.
Local Media
The "Xalq sozu" newspaper has been published in Imishli since 1990. Many people have led this newspaper over the years. Currently, Samed Ismayilov is in charge.
Other newspapers were published in the district before "Xalq sozu".
- "Qaradonlu kolxozçusu" started in 1932.
- "İmişli kolxozçusu" was published from 1938 to 1962.
- "Yüksəliş" was available from 1962 to 1966.
- "Qızıl Ulduz" was published from 1966 to 1990.
Historical Places
Imishli District has several old historical sites.
- The Khurshurt dwellings are from the Bronze Age. They are located near Nurulu village.
- The Gyzyltepe settlement also dates back to the Bronze Age. It is found north-east of Gyzylkend village.
- The Yedditepe mound is from the late Bronze Age and the Iron Age. It is west of Gyzylkend village.
- Garatapé is a settlement from the early Bronze Age. It is located near Bajiravan village.
- The Abyktepe settlement is from the Bronze Age. It is north of Aranly village.
- The remains of Galacha are from the 12th-13th centuries. They are found near the Bahramtapa-Bilasuvar highway.
Important Buildings and Services
Imishli District has many important factories and services. These help the economy and daily life.
- Imishli Sugar Factory: This factory started working in 2006. It makes sugar powder. It can produce 1,000 tonnes of sugar every day. About 850 people work here.
- Plant Oil Plant: This factory opened in 2009. It can produce 200 tons of plant oil daily.
- Combined Feed Mill: Also opened in 2009, this mill makes animal feed. It has a daily capacity of 600 tons.
- Araz Canned Juices and Cognac Plant: This plant started in 2003. It employs 150 people.
- Imishli Broiler-Poultry Company: This company produces chicken meat. It started in 2003 and makes 5 tons of poultry per day.
- Muradkhanli Enlarged Oil Mine: This oil mine began operating in 1970. It produces about 85 tonnes of oil each day.
- Imishli Locomotive Depot: This depot for trains opened in 1968. It has 218 employees.
- Bahramtapa Iron and Steel Plant: This plant makes iron and concrete products. It started in 1986.
- Imishli Iron and Steel Company: This company has been making iron and concrete products since 1960.
- "ORION-E" Company: This company started in 2003. It produces 75-80 tons of ascetics daily.
Power and Roads
- Imishli-Parsabad Power Line: A major power line connects the energy systems of Azerbaijan and Iran. This helps share electricity between the two countries.
- Imishli-Garavalili-Mirili Highway: This 12-kilometer road was rebuilt to modern standards. It makes travel easier and faster between Imishli and Saatli districts.
- Railways and Roads: The Imishli region has 98 kilometers of main roads. It also has 152 kilometers of local roads. The district has 80 kilometers of railway lines.
Court System
The Imishli District Court was first set up in 1938. It was originally called the Garadonlu People's Court. On August 8, 1938, its name was changed to Imishli District People's Court.
