Lake Sarysu (which means "Yellow Lake" in Azerbaijani) is the biggest lake in Azerbaijan. It is found in the Imishli and Sabirabad districts. These districts are part of the Kur-Araz Lowland, a large flat area in Azerbaijan.
About Lake Sarysu
Lake Sarysu is a very long lake, stretching about 22 kilometers (13.7 miles). It lies next to the Kura River, which is one of the main rivers in Azerbaijan. The lake starts in the Imishli district and goes all the way southeast to the Sabirabad district.
How the Lake Gets and Gives Water
Sarysu is one of four important lakes in this area. The water in Lake Sarysu is fresh water, which means it's not salty like ocean water. The lake gets its water from a few places:
- It receives water from Lake Ağgöl through a special canal.
- It also gets water from underground sources, called groundwater.
- Rainfall helps to fill the lake too.
The water from Lake Sarysu eventually flows out into the Kura River. There is a special station in a place called Muradbəyli that controls how much water flows from the lake into the river. This helps manage the water levels in both the lake and the river.
