Geography of Impact
Impact is a tiny town. It covers about 0.1 square miles (0.23 square kilometers). All of this area is land. There are no lakes or rivers within the town limits.
History of Impact
The story of Impact began with a poultry farm. This farm was owned by a businessman named Dallas Perkins. He worked in advertising.
Before 1960, there were strict rules about certain sales in cities around Abilene. Mr. Perkins saw a chance to create a new town. This new town would allow sales that were not common in nearby areas.
Mr. Perkins bought 27 acres of land next to his farm. He worked to make this land into a town. He named the new village "Impact" after his advertising business. In 1960, 29 local people signed papers, and Impact officially became a town.
Soon after, the citizens of Impact voted on what could be sold in their town. The vote was 18 to 2 to allow certain sales. Lawyers from Abilene tried to stop Impact from becoming a town. But in 1963, the Texas Supreme Court said Impact could be a town. They also said Impact had the right to allow these sales.
After this, two stores opened in Impact in 1963. These stores sold goods that were hard to find in other nearby places. The first month, these stores made a lot of money. This money helped the town grow.
Impact used its new income to improve the town. Roads were paved and streetlights were added. The town also started a garbage pickup service. They even hired a policeman to keep the town safe. One of the stores was called Pinky's. It was owned by Mr. Perkins and his friends.
Impact was the only town in Taylor County with these sales for many years. But in 1978, people in Abilene voted to allow the same sales in their city. After this, Impact lost its special reason for being. The stores in Impact eventually closed down. The town then became a quiet neighborhood of Abilene.
Impact has always been one of the smallest towns in Texas. Its population was highest in 1970, with 61 people. By 2000, the population had gone down to 39 people.
