Inés María Jiménez was a brave woman from Ecuador who became a hero during the country's fight for independence. She took part in many important battles to help Ecuador become free.

Biography

Inés María Jiménez was from a city called Loja. She, along with two other women named Gertrudis Esparza and Rosa Robalino, wanted to join the army and fight for Ecuador's freedom.

At that time, women were not allowed to march or fight with the soldiers. Generals Pablo Morillo and Francisco Santander had made rules against it in 1817 and 1819. So, to be able to fight, Inés María Jiménez and her friends decided to pretend to be men. Inés María Jiménez used the name Manuel Jiménez. Gertrudis Esparza became Manuel Esparza, and Rosa Robalino became Manuel Jurado.

Inés María Jiménez fought in several key battles. She was part of the Babahoyo campaign on August 21, 1821. She also fought in the famous Battle of Pichincha on May 24, 1822, which was a very important victory for Ecuador. Later, she continued to fight in other big battles, including the Junín and the Ayacucho.

Legacy

After fighting bravely in the Battle of Ayacucho, Inés María Jiménez was honored for her service. Simón Bolívar, a very important leader in the independence movement, publicly thanked and recognized the women who had fought in the wars. To remember her bravery, a street in the city of Quito was named after Inés María Jiménez.
