Inchgalbraith is a tiny island, also called an islet, located in Loch Lomond, Scotland. It is famous for being the historic home of Clan Galbraith, an old Scottish family.

Exploring Inchgalbraith's Past

Inchgalbraith has a long and interesting history, especially with Clan Galbraith. This small island was once an important stronghold for the clan. You can still see the remains of their ancient castle there today.

The Old Castle and Its Secrets

The castle on Inchgalbraith is very old. It might even have been built on a crannog. A crannog is an artificial island, often built in lakes during ancient times. This would have made the castle very secure. In the late 1800s, parts of the castle were restored using concrete. This helped preserve some of its old walls.

Where is Inchgalbraith?

Inchgalbraith is located on the western side of Loch Lomond. It's about two miles southeast of a village called Luss.

Size and Features of the Islet

This islet is quite small. Its highest point is only about 25 feet above the water. Most of the island's area is covered by the old castle and the stones that have fallen from its walls over time.

Wildlife on Inchgalbraith

Even though it's small, Inchgalbraith was once an important place for wildlife.

Osprey Breeding Ground

For many years, Inchgalbraith was a breeding spot for ospreys. These large, fish-eating birds would build their nests and raise their young on the island. However, ospreys stopped breeding there around 1869.
