Discovering Indian Bay's Past
Indian Bay has a long and interesting history. People have lived in this area for a very long time.
Ancient History and Native Americans
Evidence shows that Native American people lived here many centuries ago. There are nine ancient mounds nearby. These mounds were built by Native Americans. The largest mound covers more than an acre of land. Scientists believe that artifacts found here are between 1,300 and 1,700 years old. These sites are important for understanding ancient cultures. However, they are not open to the public.
Early Settlers and River Trade
Around 1825, new settlers arrived in the Indian Bay area. They began to harvest large cypress trees. They also planted fields of cotton. By the mid-1800s, Indian Bay had grown into a busy community. It had several stores, a cotton gin, and a sawmill.
Indian Bay became an important stop for steamboats. These boats traveled on the White River. A post office opened in Indian Bay in 1860. Two large cotton farms, called plantations, also grew in the area. One was "Lamberton," started by Joel and Judith Lambert in 1839. Another was developed by William Mayo around 1853.
