The Indian Harbor Yacht Club is a club for boating in the United States. It is located at 710 Steamboat Road in Greenwich, CT. The club has easy access to Long Island Sound.

The club started in 1889 in New York City. It is mainly for people who own yachts and other pleasure boats. The club also has a long history of competitive boat races. The New York Times once said that the Indian Harbor Yacht Club is "among the most influential institutions of its kind in the country." This means it is one of the most important boating clubs around.

Club History

The Indian Harbor Yacht Club began on July 1, 1889. It was started by leaders like Frank Bowne Jones and Henry S. Doremus. The new club grew from the older Greenwich Yacht Club.

The main goal of the club was to encourage the sport of yachting. This included helping with boat design and building. It also aimed to teach members about sailing and navigation. Later, the club added another goal: to provide fun activities for its members.

This was mostly a sailing club. Henry E. Doremus was the first Commodore, which is like the club's president. William Ross Proctor was the Vice Commodore, and Charles J. Hart was the Rear Commodore.

The club's first main office was in New York City. In 1892, it rented Finch's Island in Greenwich to use as its sailing base. The club's current location was set up in 1895 by Commodore Charles T. Wills. The main clubhouse building was finished in 1921. It has a special building style called Mediterranean Revival design. The architect, Henry Pelton, was also on the club's race committee.

Racing and Achievements

The Indian Harbor Yacht Club has sent more boats to the Newport Bermuda Race than any other yacht club in the world. This is a very famous offshore boat race.

Club members were also part of the crew of the Intrepid yacht. The Intrepid won the America's Cup in 1967 and 1970. The America's Cup is one of the most famous sailing races in the world.

In 1989, the club celebrated its 100th birthday. For this event, they published a book called 'A Century of sailing'. This book told the story of the club's first 100 years.

The club's buildings on Steamboat Road were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. This means they are recognized as important historic places. This was because of the club's important role in boat racing and its unique clubhouse design.

The Indian Harbor Yacht Club is also one of the clubs that helped start the National Sailing Hall of Fame.
