The Indian Mission School, also known as the Nanticoke Indian Center, is a special historic school building. It is located in Millsboro, Delaware, in Sussex County, Delaware. This building was constructed around 1948. It replaced an earlier school that had been destroyed by fire.
About the School Building
The Indian Mission School is a one-story building. It is made of masonry, which means it uses bricks or stones. The outside is covered with stucco, a type of plaster. The roof is shaped like a triangle, which is called a gable roof. The main entrance has a concrete block covering.
Why Was This School Built?
The school was created because of new rules in the early 1900s. These rules changed how schools were set up. They said that children from the Nanticoke tribe had to go to the same schools as African-American students. The Indian Mission School was built to serve the Nanticoke community during this time.
Becoming a Historic Place
The Indian Mission School is an important part of history. Because of its importance, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. This list includes buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history.
