About the Building
The Indian Mission School is a one-story building. It is made of masonry and covered with a material called stucco. The roof has a pointed shape, known as a gable roof. The main entrance has a concrete block covering.
Why This School Was Important
This school was created for the children of the Nanticoke Indian Association. In the early 1900s, new rules meant that Native American children often had to attend schools with African-American students. To help their children get an education that respected their heritage, the Nanticoke community organized this school. It became a very important place for their community.
Recognized as Historic
The Indian Mission School was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. This means it is recognized as an important historical site in the United States.
