The Indian Mission Church is a historic Methodist church building located near Millsboro in Sussex County, Delaware. It was built in 1921 and has been an important place for the local community for many years. This church is especially significant to the Nanticoke Indian Association.

About the Indian Mission Church

The Indian Mission Church is a one-story building made of wood. Its outside is covered with a type of siding called clapboard. The church was designed in the Late Gothic Revival style. This style was popular for churches and other buildings in the early 1900s.

What Does It Look Like?

The church has some cool features that make it stand out. It has a tall, two-story tower with a sloped roof. You'll also notice its special windows, which are called lancet windows. These windows are tall and narrow, often with pointed tops, which is a common design in Gothic Revival buildings.

A New Beginning for the Nanticoke Community

The church's congregation, which is the group of people who attend services, started in 1881. Before that, many of these families were part of the Harmony Church. However, the families who were strongly connected to the Nanticoke Indian Association decided to form their own church. This happened after a new minister was hired at Harmony Church. The Nanticoke families wanted a church that would better serve their community's specific needs and traditions. So, they created the Indian Mission Church, which became a central place for the Nanticoke people.

A Special Historic Place

Because of its important history and unique architecture, the Indian Mission Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. This means it's recognized as a significant historical site in the United States. Being on this list helps protect the church and its history for future generations.
