Harmony Church is a historic church located in Millsboro, Delaware. It's a special building that has been around for a long time. This church is known for its unique style and its important role in the local community's history.
About Harmony Church
Harmony Church was built in 1891. It is a one-story building made of wood. The outside is covered with a special type of siding. The church has a unique look called the Late Gothic Revival style. This style often includes pointed arches and tall windows, like old cathedrals.
Building Features
The church has a two-story section attached to its main part. It sits on a strong foundation made of concrete blocks. One of the most interesting parts of Harmony Church is its tall, two-story tower. This tower has a "crenellated" top, which means it looks a bit like the top of a castle wall.
A Long History
The church community, or "congregation," started meeting way back in 1818. This means people have been gathering here for worship for over 200 years! Over time, Harmony Church played a big part in the lives of people in Millsboro.
Later, another church called the Indian Mission Church was formed. This new church grew out of Harmony Church, especially after an African American minister joined the community. This shows how the church adapted and grew with the needs of the people.
National Recognition
Because of its history and unique architecture, Harmony Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history or architecture. Being on this list helps protect the church and recognize its value.
