About the Building
Design and Look
The Indiana Michigan Power Center is a 27-story building. It stands at about 134.7 meters (442 feet) tall. The building was designed by a company called Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates. It has a unique design that makes it look like two separate buildings. One part is the main tower, and the other part, which is attached, holds the elevators.
The Original Big Plan
When the building was first planned, it was part of a much bigger idea. The original plan included two more office towers and a hotel. These buildings were meant to be part of a large city improvement project. This project was in downtown Fort Wayne in the late 1970s.
Many parts of this big plan were finished. These included the Grand Wayne Center and the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory. The Hilton Fort Wayne and the Civic Center Parking Garage were also built. The Embassy Theatre was also renovated.
However, the other two towers and the hotel were never built. This was because of money problems and rising costs. A change in the construction company also added to the expenses. Today, a nice plaza with trees and plants sits where the other towers were supposed to be. This plaza is now used for food trucks, community events, and farmer's markets.
Who Works Here?
Main Companies
When the building first opened, its main tenants were Indiana Michigan Power and Summit Bank. Summit Bank was the biggest bank in Fort Wayne at that time. Over the years, different companies joined together. Eventually, JPMorgan Chase became a major tenant.
Today, Indiana Michigan Power is the biggest tenant. They use most of the top half of the building. In 2014, the building was renamed the Indiana Michigan Power Center because they are the largest tenant. Another big company, SIRVA, moved into the building in 2017. They use floors 5 through 11.
JPMorgan Chase still has offices on the first and second floors. They also have a Chase retail bank branch on the first floor. This branch has ATMs for people to use. Other companies also have offices in the Indiana Michigan Power Center.
Building Changes Hands
The group that owned the building was going to end their ownership in 2016. This would have meant that the companies in the building would need to find new places to work. But in 2014, a new group of owners bought the building for $12 million. They promised to spend $5 million to make improvements.
The new owners signed new, long-term agreements with Indiana Michigan Power and JPMorgan Chase. Because of these changes, the building was renamed the Indiana Michigan Power Center. New signs were added to the sides of the building.
Food and Fun
For many years, the thirteenth floor of the building had a cafeteria called the Window Garden Café. It was managed by a company called Sodexo. The cafeteria closed for a while.
It reopened in 2018 under new management. Then, in 2019, it reopened again as NOLA on 13. So, people working in the building or visiting can still grab a bite to eat there.
