The Indonesian twenty-five rupiah coin (Rp25) was a type of money used in Indonesia. It's not used anymore! This coin was first made in 1971 and its design was updated in 1991.
Coins of this value were made until 1996. They stopped being valid for buying things on August 31, 2010.
The First Rp25 Coin (1971-1990)
The very first Rp25 coins were made in 1971. They were created from a metal mix called cupronickel. These coins were about 20 mm (0.79 in) wide and 1.25 mm (0.049 in) thick. Each coin weighed about 3.52 g (0.124 oz). The edge of the coin had small ridges, like many coins today.
The front of the coin said "BANK INDONESIA" and "25 RUPIAH." It also had two stars. The back of the coin showed a picture of a beautiful bird called the Victoria crowned pigeon (Goura victoria). It also had the words "Rp25." These coins were no longer valid money after June 25, 2002.
The Second Rp25 Coin (1991-1996)
The Bank of Indonesia changed the Rp25 coin design for the last time on December 16, 1991. This new version was made from aluminum, which is much lighter. It was 18 mm (0.71 in) wide and 1.98 mm (0.078 in) thick. Each coin weighed only 1.22 g (0.043 oz). This coin had a smooth edge, unlike the earlier version.
The front of this coin featured the national symbol of Indonesia, the Garuda Pancasila. It also showed the year it was made, like "1996," and the words "BANK INDONESIA." The back of the coin had a picture of a nutmeg plant (Myristica fragrans). You could also see "Rp25" and "Buah Pala," which means Nutmeg in Indonesian. These coins stopped being valid money on August 31, 2010. This happened because their value had become very low, making them not useful for daily buying and selling.
