The fifty rupiah coin (Rp50) is a small coin from Indonesia. It is part of the country's money, called the Indonesian rupiah. This coin was first made in 1971. The last time new Rp50 coins were made was in 2003.

Today, only the Rp50 coins made between 1999 and 2003 are still official money. This means you can use them to buy things. However, you don't see them much anymore because they are worth very little.

First Rp50 Coin: 1971-1990

The first Rp50 coin. The left side shows the back, and the right side shows the front.

The very first Rp50 coin came out in 1971. It was made from a metal mix called cupronickel. This coin weighed about 6.06 g (0.214 oz). It was 24 mm (0.94 in) wide and 1.5 mm (0.059 in) thick. Its edge had small ridges, like many coins.

On the front of the coin, it said "BANK INDONESIA," "50 RUPIAH," and the year "1971." There were also two stars. The back of the coin showed the words "Rp50" and a picture of a beautiful bird called the greater bird-of-paradise. Over a billion of these coins were made!

These coins stopped being official money on June 25, 2002. People could exchange them for new money at banks for a few years after that.

Second Rp50 Coin: 1991-1998

In 1991, the Bank of Indonesia released a new Rp50 coin. This one was made from aluminum-bronze. They kept making this version until 1998. This coin was lighter, weighing about 3.18 g (0.112 oz). It was 20 mm (0.79 in) wide and 1.58 mm (0.062 in) thick. Its edge also had ridges.

The front of this coin featured the national symbol of Indonesia, the Garuda Pancasila. It also said "BANK INDONESIA" and the year it was made, like "1996." On the back, there was a picture of the famous komodo dragon and the words "Rp 50" and "Komodo."

These coins were no longer official money after November 30, 2006.

Here's how many of these coins were made each year:

Year Amount Made
1991 67,000,000
1992 70,000,000
1993 120,000,000
1994 300,000,000
1995 591,880,000
1996 We don't know the exact number
1997 150,000
1998 150,000

Third Rp50 Coin: 1999-2003

In 1999, the Bank of Indonesia changed the Rp50 coin again. This time, it was made from aluminum. The back of the coin now showed a picture of the black-naped oriole, a bird also known as "KEPODANG." It also said "50 RUPIAH."

The front of the coin stayed the same as the second version. It still had the Garuda Pancasila symbol, the year it was made (like "2002"), and "BANK INDONESIA." These aluminum coins were made until 2003. They were very light, weighing only 1.36 g (0.048 oz). They were 20 mm (0.79 in) wide and 2 mm (0.079 in) thick. Unlike the earlier coins, these had a smooth edge.
