Inessa Mykolayivna Kravets is a former athlete from Ukraine. She was born on October 5, 1966. Inessa was famous for her skills in two track and field events: the triple jump and the long jump. She was one of the best female triple jumpers when the event became popular in big competitions.

For a long time, Inessa held the world record in the triple jump. Her record was one of the longest-standing in women's athletics. In 2021, another athlete named Yulimar Rojas broke her record.

Inessa Kravets's Athletic Journey

Inessa was born in Dnipropetrovsk. She first made a big splash in the triple jump in 1991. That year, she set a new world record by jumping 14.95 meters in June.

Early Success and Olympic Medals

Her first important medals came in 1992. She won a gold medal at the first-ever women's triple jump event. This was at the 1992 European Athletics Indoor Championships. Later that year, she won a silver medal in the long jump at the 1992 Summer Olympics. She competed as part of the Unified Team.

In 1993, Inessa won another gold medal. This was at the first women's triple jump event at the 1993 IAAF World Indoor Championships.

World Records and Championships

In 1994, Inessa won the long jump at the 1994 IAAF World Cup. She also earned two medals at the 1994 European Athletics Championships. She took home a silver medal in the long jump and a bronze medal in the triple jump.

In 1995, she set a new world record in the triple jump. This happened at the 1995 World Championships in Athletics in Gothenburg. She jumped an amazing 15.50 meters! She later said she was inspired by looking at a picture of male triple jumper Jonathan Edwards. The next year, in 1996, she won the Olympic gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. She became the very first woman to win an Olympic gold in the triple jump.

Following the Rules

During her career, Inessa Kravets faced some challenges related to following international rules for athletes. In 1993, she was not allowed to compete for three months. This was because she used certain substances that were not allowed. Later, in July 2000, she was suspended for two years. This happened after tests showed she had used another banned substance. These rules are in place to make sure all athletes compete fairly.
