Infanta Sofía of Spain (born 29 April 2007) is a member of the Spanish royal family. She is the younger daughter of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. Sofía is second in line to the Spanish throne, right after her older sister, Leonor, Princess of Asturias.

Sofía was born in Madrid when her grandfather, King Juan Carlos, was king. She has had a similar education to her sister. She attended the Santa María de los Rosales School and later studied at UWC Atlantic College in Wales, United Kingdom. As of July 2025, she is studying at Forward College.

Early Life and Family

Infanta Sofía was born on 29 April 2007 in Madrid. Her birth was announced by the royal family using text messages. This was similar to how her older sister's birth was announced.

Sofía was named after her grandmother, Queen Sofía of Spain. She was christened on 15 July at the Palacio de la Zarzuela. Her godparents are her maternal grandmother, Paloma Rocasolano, and Konstantin, Prince of Vidin. Like her sister, she was given the additional name de Todos los Santos (of All the Saints) during her christening. This is a tradition in the Bourbon family.

She received her First Communion on 17 May 2017. Her family, including her parents, sister, and grandparents, were there to support her. On 23 May 2023, she received the sacrament of confirmation.

Education and Studies

Like her older sister, Sofía started her education at the Escuela Infantil Guardia Real in 2009. This is a daycare for children of the Spanish Royal Guard.

Primary and Secondary School

On 13 September 2010, Sofía began primary school at the Santa María de los Rosales School in Madrid. She continued her studies there for many years.

College Education

In August 2023, Sofía began a two-year International Baccalaureate program. She studied at the UWC Atlantic College in Wales. She completed this program and graduated on 24 May 2025.

In July 2025, the Royal Household announced Sofía's next steps in her education. She is studying Politics and International Relations at Forward College. This institution is connected with the University of London. Her studies began in September 2025 and will last three years. She will study in three different European cities: Lisbon, Paris, and Berlin.

Royal Activities

As an Infanta of Spain, Sofía often attends official events with her parents and sister. These events include the opening of Parliament and the National Day parade. She also attends the Princess of Asturias Awards and Princess of Girona Awards ceremonies.

Early Public Appearances

At the age of three, Sofía attended her first official event. This was a reception at the Royal Palace of Madrid to celebrate the Spanish national football team winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

In 2021, Infanta Sofía and Princess Leonor took part in their first joint event without their parents. They represented the "A Tree for Europe" campaign. This campaign is run by the European youth association Equipo Europa [es].

Supporting Her Family

While her sister was studying abroad, Sofía took on more public duties. She accompanied her parents to events like the 2021 and 2022 National Day parades. She also attended the 2023 Copa del Rey final.

On 16 July 2022, Sofía traveled with her sister Leonor on their first international trip alone. They went to support the Spanish women's national football team. The team was playing against Denmark in the UEFA Women's Euro 2022.

In August 2023, Sofía traveled with her mother, Queen Letizia, to Australia. They watched the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup final between Spain and England. The Queen and Infanta presented the trophy to the Spanish team, who won the World Cup.

In July 2024, she traveled with her father, King Felipe, to watch the Spanish national football team play in the UEFA Euro 2024 final. Sofía presented the trophy with her father after Spain won.

Solo Engagements

In April 2024, Patrimonio Nacional announced that Sofía would be a patron of a photo contest. This contest aims to show the beauty of Spain through photography. On 5 December 2024, it was announced that the contest would only feature Sofía, not her parents or sister. She handed out the awards on December 13 at the Royal Palace of Madrid. This was her first official event by herself.

After graduating in the spring of 2025, Sofía resumed her official duties in July that year. On July 15, she joined her parents for a meeting with the Board of Trustees of the Spanish Committee of the United World Colleges Foundation. The next day, she went with her parents to the graduation ceremony for new Navy officers, where her sister was graduating. At the end of July, she attended the Princess of Girona Awards ceremony and the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 final.

Titles and Honours

As a child of the Prince of Asturias (who is now King), Sofía was born an infanta. She is known as "Her Royal Highness Infanta Doña Sofía." Even though she has a similar high status to a prince, Sofía does not have the title of "princess." In Spain, only the person who will inherit the Crown is allowed to use that title.

After her father became king on 19 June 2014, Sofía became second in line to the Spanish throne.
