Ingersoll Lockwood (born August 2, 1841 – died September 30, 1918) was an American lawyer and writer. He is best known for his fun children's books, especially the Baron Trump series.

Lockwood also wrote other books for kids, a play, and even a science fiction novel called 1900: or; The Last President. Sometimes, he used a different name, Irwin Longman, for his non-fiction books.

Life and Early Career

Ingersoll Lockwood was born in Ossining, New York. His father, Munson Lockwood, was a lawyer and a general in the New York State Militia. Munson Lockwood also helped start Ossining's first bank and was the Warden of Sing Sing prison for a few years. Ingersoll had two brothers, Henry Clay Lockwood and Howard Lockwood.

Becoming a Diplomat

Like his father, Ingersoll Lockwood studied to become a lawyer. But his first job was as a diplomat! In 1862, when he was just 21, Abraham Lincoln chose him to be a Consul for the United States in the Kingdom of Hanover. This made him the youngest American consul at the time. He worked there for four years.

Law and Writing

After his time as a diplomat, Lockwood came back to the U.S. and started a law firm in New York City with his older brother, Henry.

By the 1880s, Lockwood began a second career as a speaker and writer. In 1884, he married Winifred Wallace Tinker, who was also a writer. They later divorced in 1892.

Later Years

Lockwood spent his retirement years in Saratoga Springs, New York. His last book was a collection of poems called In Varying Mood, or, Jetsam, Flotsam and Ligan, published in 1912.

Ingersoll Lockwood passed away in Saratoga Springs in 1918, when he was 77 years old.
