Ingle Hall is a very old and important building in Hobart, Tasmania. You can find it at the corner of Macquarie and Argyle Streets. This historic building has been used for many different things over the years. It is currently empty, but it was most recently home to a museum about printing.

Nobody knows exactly when Ingle Hall was built. This is because it was constructed before 1822, which is when Tasmania started keeping official records of buildings. The hall is named after John Ingle, who might have been one of the first people to live there. Ingle Hall was once on a special list called the Register of the National Estate, which helps protect important places. It is also on the Tasmanian Heritage Register, meaning it is recognized as a valuable part of Tasmania's history. Some people believe it is the oldest building in Hobart, and even all of Tasmania, but this has not been fully proven.

The Story of Ingle Hall

Early Days and First Owners

For a long time, Ingle Hall didn't even have its famous name. People just called it by its location. It was probably built as a warehouse, which is a large building for storing goods. Either John Ingle or Edward Lord (grazier) built it. Edward Lord was the brother of Sir John Owen, 1st Baronet. The building was first used around 1811 or 1814.

Many studies suggest that Edward Lord most likely built it. He then sold it to John Ingle. Later in 1814, a person named Roland Warpole Loane bought the building.

Many Uses Over the Years

Ingle Hall has had many different jobs throughout its history.

  • From 1818 to 1822, it was a general store, selling all sorts of items.
  • After that, it became a business.
  • In 1826, it turned into the Leek Inn for three years. An "inn" is like a small hotel or guesthouse.
  • In 1846, it became the first home of The Hutchins School. This famous school stayed there for three years until its own building was ready.
  • It has also been the Tasmanian Coffee Palace, which was like a fancy cafe or hotel.
  • At other times, it was a boarding house, where people could rent rooms.
  • It was even a private home for families.

Saving a Piece of History

In 1949, the government of Tasmania bought Ingle Hall. They had plans to knock down the building. However, many people disagreed with this idea and spoke out against it. Because of this widespread criticism, the demolition never happened. This means Ingle Hall was saved and is still standing today!
