Growing Up and Starting Ballet
Ingrid grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. When she was 8 years old, she started learning ballet. She joined a special program that helped kids in her community learn dance. She also trained at famous schools like Dançando Para Não Dançar and Theatro Municipal's school. She learned from great teachers like Deborah Colker and Pedro Pederneiras.
Her Ballet Career
When Ingrid was 17, she became an apprentice with Grupo Corpo. This was a big step in her dance career.
In 2008, at age 18, Ingrid moved to New York City. She moved because there were not many chances for Black dancers in Brazil. Soon after she arrived, Arthur Mitchell, who started the Dance Theatre of Harlem, invited her to join. She first joined the junior company, called DTH Ensemble. In 2012, the main company started up again, and Ingrid became a permanent dancer there.
Making Ballet More Diverse
Ingrid Silva believes ballet should include more people from different backgrounds. She has spoken out about this important topic.
On The Today Show, Ingrid shared a challenge she faces. She has to color her pointe shoes to match her skin tone. This process is called "pancaking." Most shoe brands only make light-colored pointe shoes.
In 2020, Ingrid was featured in a Nike advertisement. This ad celebrated Black History Month and was narrated by Serena Williams. Later that year, Ingrid danced The Swan. She performed for a fundraiser called Swans for Relief. This event helped dancers and dance companies affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Outside of her ballet work, Ingrid also helped start EmpowHerNY. This is a platform where different women share their stories on Instagram.
Personal Life
In November 2020, Ingrid Silva became a mother. She gave birth to her daughter.
