The Inn at 97 Winder is a beautiful old building in Midtown Detroit, Michigan. It's located in an area called Brush Park. This special building was once known as the John Harvey House. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991 because of its important history. Today, it's a fancy hotel, just a short walk from big sports stadiums like Comerica Park and Ford Field.
A Look Back: The John Harvey House
John Harvey was a very successful pharmacist in Detroit. But he is most remembered for his kindness and generosity. After the American Civil War, he helped educate and feed poor children and orphans in the city. He continued this important work into the early 1900s.
Harvey started two schools: Detroit's Industrial School and the Sabbath Mission School. These schools helped teach children who didn't have much money.
John Harvey passed away in 1905. His wife continued to live in the house until the 1920s. Later, in the 1920s, an automobile worker named Jesse Hobbs bought the home. In 1938, the large house was changed into a place where people could rent rooms. Some of the bigger rooms were divided to make more space.
In 1986, some developers bought the John Harvey House. They worked to fix up and restore the building. In 2005, it opened as the historic Inn at 97 Winder. It now has 10 guest rooms for visitors.
Amazing Architecture
John Harvey hired an architect named John V. Smith to design his house. The house was built in 1887. It combines two fancy styles: Second Empire and Queen Anne. It stands in the well-known Brush Park neighborhood.
The John Harvey House is made of red brick. It sits on a strong stone foundation. It has a special kind of roof called a mansard roof. The front of the house has a main entrance in the middle. It also features wooden supports under the windows and towers.
The house is very large, with about 11,000 square feet (about 1,022 square meters) of space. Inside, you can find eight beautiful marble fireplaces. There is also a grand three-story staircase.
