History of the John Harvey House
John Harvey was a very successful pharmacist in Detroit. But he is most remembered for his kindness and generosity. He helped many poor children and orphans in the city. This started right after the American Civil War. He continued his good work into the early 1900s.
John Harvey created the Detroit Industrial School. He also started the Sabbath Mission School. These schools helped to educate children who did not have much money.
John Harvey passed away in 1905. His wife continued to live in the house until the 1920s. Later, in the 1920s, an automobile worker named Jesse Hobbs bought the home. In 1938, the house was changed into a rooming house. Some of the bigger rooms were divided into smaller ones.
Architecture and Design
John Harvey chose a famous architect named John V. Smith. Smith designed this house with two main styles. These are Second Empire and Queen Anne architecture. The house is in the fancy Brush Park neighborhood.
The John Harvey House was finished in 1887. It is made of red brick. It sits on a strong stone foundation. The roof is a special kind called a mansard roof. The front of the house has a main entrance in the middle. It also has wooden supports under the windows and towers. The house is very large, with about 11,000 square feet. Inside, it has eight fireplaces made of marble. There is also a grand three-story staircase.
In 1986, some developers bought the John Harvey House. They worked to fix up and restore the building. In 2005, they opened it as the historic Inn at 97 Winder. It now has 10 guest rooms for visitors.
