Jason S Hunter (born July 6, 1970), known as Inspectah Deck, is an American rapper and music producer. He is a key member of two famous hip-hop groups: Wu-Tang Clan and Czarface. People often praise his clever lyrics and his strong performances on many of his groups' popular songs. He has also become a respected producer, creating music for other rappers and his own projects.
Early Life and Beginnings
Growing Up in New York
Jason Hunter was born on July 6, 1970, in The Bronx, a borough of New York City. He grew up in Staten Island, another part of New York City. He often talks about the Park Hill Projects in Clifton, Staten Island, where he lived.
School Days and Friendships
While growing up, Jason went to school with other future famous rappers. These included Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, and Remedy. His father passed away when Jason was six years old.
Music Career Highlights
Joining Wu-Tang Clan
Jason Hunter developed a calm and quiet personality. He brought this calm style to his stage persona, Inspectah Deck. This made him a good balance to the more energetic members of the Wu-Tang Clan. Method Man once described him as someone who "will sit back and watch you play yourself."
Early Success with the Group
Inspectah Deck was a very important part of Wu-Tang Clan's first album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). He had many praised verses on hit songs like "C.R.E.A.M.," "Protect Ya Neck," and "Triumph." His verse on "Triumph" is considered one of the best in hip-hop history.
Producing for Other Artists
Besides rapping, Inspectah Deck also started producing music. He created tracks for other Wu-Tang members' solo albums. For example, he produced "Elements" for Method Man and the title track for GZA's album Beneath the Surface.
Solo Music Journey
First Album Challenges
Inspectah Deck's first solo album, Uncontrolled Substance, was planned for release in 1995. However, it faced many delays. A flood in producer RZA's studio destroyed over 100 beats, including all the music made for the album. The album finally came out in September 1999. It received good reviews from music critics.
More Solo Albums
In 2003, Inspectah Deck released his second album, The Movement. He later said this album did not meet his hopes. In 2006, he released The Resident Patient. This album was meant to be a story leading up to The Movement.
Working with Czarface
Inspectah Deck also formed a new group called Czarface with Boston artists 7L & Esoteric. Their first album, Czarface, came out in 2013. They have released several albums since then, including Every Hero Needs a Villain (2015) and A Fistful of Peril (2016). They even worked with Marvel Entertainment for a Black Panther web-series song.
Recent Solo Work
On March 23, 2010, Inspectah Deck released his fourth solo album, Manifesto. This album featured other well-known rappers like Raekwon and Kurupt. He has also mentioned plans for an instrumental album of his own productions. His latest solo album, Chamber No. 9, was released in 2019.
