International Rice Festival facts for kids
The International Rice Festival is a big yearly party held in Crowley, Louisiana. It happens during the third weekend of October and celebrates all things about rice! This festival is the oldest farming celebration in Louisiana and one of the biggest in the state.
The very first festival took place on October 5, 1937. Back then, it was called the National Rice Festival. It changed its name to the "International Rice Festival" in 1946. This was after it took a break during World War II (from 1942 to 1945). Since it began, more than seven million people have visited this fun event!

What Happens at the Festival?
The International Rice Festival is packed with exciting activities for everyone.
Parades and Fun Contests
There are two parades during the festival. The biggest one, called the Grand Parade, takes place on Saturday. You can see lots of floats and people celebrating!
The festival also has some cool contests:
- A rice cooking contest where chefs try to win the title of "Chef de Riz." This means "Rice Chef" in French!
- A rice eating contest for those who love to eat fast!
Special Events and Entertainment
The festival also includes a special dinner for farmers and a fancy Queens' Ball. You can enjoy live entertainment all day long, from early morning until late at night. There's always something fun to watch or listen to.
Arts, Crafts, and More
If you like creative things, you'll enjoy the arts and crafts exhibit. It's held right next to the festival grounds and also on Main Street. You can find unique handmade items and see local artists' work.

A Short Break and Return
The festival took a break in 2020 because of a big shutdown across the country. But don't worry, it came back in 2021! The person who helps organize everything is Shanna C. Monk.

Even famous people have visited the festival! In 1959, John F. Kennedy, who later became president, and his wife Jacqueline visited the festival. They rode in a cool Cadillac car during their visit.
