Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) is an organization that helps scientists from different countries work together. Its main goal is to prevent the spread of dangerous weapons and to make sure science is used for peaceful purposes, like keeping people safe from diseases (this is called biosafety). The ISTC connects scientists and research groups around the world. Its main office is in Astana, Kazakhstan. Many countries have been part of the ISTC, including Armenia, the European Union, Georgia, Japan, Kazakhstan, the Republic of Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Norway, Tajikistan, and the United States. Scientists from almost 60 countries have worked on projects with the ISTC.

The ISTC helps set up international science projects. It also helps businesses and scientists find experts and research centers that have special scientific knowledge.

How the ISTC Started

The ISTC was created in 1992. At first, its main office was in Moscow. Its purpose was to help scientists who used to work on dangerous weapons in the former Soviet Union. The idea was to help these scientists use their skills for peaceful research instead. This helped make the world a safer place by turning their knowledge towards things that benefit everyone.

In July 2015, the ISTC moved its headquarters to Astana’s Nazarbayev University. This happened after Russia decided to leave the organization.
