International Velvet is a 1978 movie from Britain and America. It's a sports drama film and a follow-up to the famous 1944 movie National Velvet. The film stars Tatum O'Neal, Christopher Plummer, Anthony Hopkins, and Nanette Newman. It was directed by Bryan Forbes. The movie got different opinions from people who watched it. Part of International Velvet was filmed at Birmingham University in England.
Story of the Film
The movie begins with teenage Sarah Velvet Brown. Sadly, her parents die in a car crash. This means Sarah has to leave her home in Cave Creek, Arizona, in the United States. She moves to England to live with her aunt, Velvet Brown, and Velvet's boyfriend, John.
Velvet Brown is the main character from the first movie, National Velvet. When Velvet was Sarah's age, she rode her horse, The Pie, in the famous Grand National horse race. She finished first, but she and The Pie were disqualified. This happened because Velvet was a 14-year-old girl, and the rules did not allow girls to compete.
The Pie later retired from racing. He had his last foal (baby horse) after Sarah arrived in England. Sarah and Velvet were there for the birth of this foal. Sarah really wanted to buy him. She later found out that Velvet had already bought him for her! Sarah named the foal Arizona Pie.
Sarah showed great talent with horses. She was chosen for the British Olympic team. She was the youngest member, but she did very well. She trained hard under the strict guidance of Captain Johnson. Sarah achieved her dream and entered the Olympic Three Day Event. This is a tough competition with three parts: dressage, cross-country, and show jumping. Sarah helped Great Britain win the team competition and earned a gold medal.
During the Olympics, Sarah met an American competitor named Scott Saunders. They fell in love, and Sarah moved back to America with him. At the end of the movie, Sarah and Scott are engaged to be married. Sarah gives her Olympic gold medal to her Aunt Velvet as a special thank you. Sarah eventually returns to England to introduce Scott to Velvet and John.
