Intoxication facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Intoxication is a word used to describe when a person's body or mind is affected by something they have taken in. This can happen if someone takes in too much of a substance, even things that are usually harmless. It can also happen if someone accidentally takes in something that is not good for them, like a poison.

When a person is intoxicated, their body or mind might not work as usual. For example, their senses, like how they see or feel things, might be different. They might also act or speak in ways they normally wouldn't. How much a person is affected depends on what they took in and how much of it.

For example, if someone has too much caffeine, which is a mild stimulant found in some drinks, they might feel very energetic or a bit shaky. Usually, this doesn't cause serious harm. However, other substances can have stronger effects and might make a person feel very unwell or confused.

How Substances Affect the Body

When a substance enters your body, it can travel through your blood and reach different parts, including your brain. Different substances affect the body in different ways.

Temporary Changes

Some substances cause temporary changes. This means the effects only last for a short time. For instance, you might feel sleepy after taking certain medicines, or very awake after a strong drink with caffeine. These changes usually go away as the body processes the substance.

Feeling Unwell

Sometimes, if a person takes in too much of a substance, or a substance that is not good for them, they might start to feel unwell. This could include feeling dizzy, sick to their stomach, or having trouble thinking clearly. It's important to always be careful about what you eat or drink and to only take medicines prescribed by a doctor.
