Invermark Castle is an old, strong building from the 1500s. It's a type of castle called a tower house, which is a tall, narrow castle designed for defense. You can find it in Angus, Scotland, near a beautiful lake called Loch Lee and the start of Glen Esk.

History of Invermark Castle

This castle stands where an even older castle from the 1300s used to be. For many years, Invermark Castle belonged to a powerful family called the Clan Lindsay. They were the Lindsays of Crawford.

The castle was built to help protect the area from groups of people from the Scottish Highlands who sometimes raided nearby lands. It was a very important stronghold.

A famous person named David Lindsay, 9th Earl of Crawford died at Invermark Castle in 1558. The castle you see today was built in the 1500s. Later, in the early 1600s, it was made even taller. The castle was left empty in 1803 and has been that way ever since.

What Invermark Castle Looks Like

The castle built in the 1500s had three floors. It had a special walkway at the top called a parapet walk. This walkway was supported by stone brackets called corbels.

Later, another floor and a small attic space, called a garret, were added. A two-story tower was also built at one corner. The castle walls have rounded corners, which made them stronger. Two very large chimneys have windows that let light into the garret.

The main entrance to the castle is on the first floor, not on the ground. People would use a wooden bridge or stairs that could be moved to reach it. The entrance is a rounded arch and still has a strong iron gate called a yett. This led into the main hall, with a small room next to it.

To get to the basement, which has a strong arched ceiling, you had to use a spiral staircase called a wheel stair. There was another spiral staircase, called a turnpike stair, that led to the upper floors, but it is no longer there.

Today, the castle's entrance is blocked off. It is also high above the ground. This makes it very hard for visitors to go inside.

Around the castle, you can still see the stone outlines of other buildings that used to be there. Invermark Castle is now a Scheduled monument. This means it is a very important historical site protected by law.
