The Inverurie Locomotive Works was a large factory where trains were built and repaired. It opened in 1902 when the Great North of Scotland Railway (GNSR) moved their workshops. They came from Kittybrewster, which is near Aberdeen, about 15 miles (24 km) away.

A Look Back: The Inverurie Works

The Great North of Scotland Railway built this big workshop on a 15-acre (6-hectare) piece of land. It was located in Inverurie, about 16 miles (26 km) northwest of Aberdeen. The works were right next to Inverurie railway station and the train line going to Keith.

What Was Built There?

Only ten locomotives were ever built at the Inverurie Works. These were special 4-4-0 type steam engines. They belonged to the GNSR's V and F classes. These engines were made between 1906 and 1921.

Even though the V and F engines had some differences, like the F class being "superheated" (which made them more powerful), they were later grouped together. The London and North Eastern Railway called them the LNER Class D40.

The Works Closes Down

The Inverurie Works kept fixing locomotives for many years. It continued to operate under the London and North Eastern Railway and later under British Railways. The works finally closed its doors in 1969.

Its Legacy Today

The name "Inverurie Loco Works" lives on in the local community. It is used by Inverurie Loco Works FC, which is a part-time professional football club. They play in the Highland Football League.

Also, one of the old buildings from the locomotive works has been given a new purpose. It is now home to the Garioch Heritage Centre.
