Inverurie and District is a special area, or ward, in Aberdeenshire. It's one of nineteen such areas. People living here get to choose four people, called Councillors, to represent them. These Councillors work for the Aberdeenshire Council and help make decisions for the local community.

What is a Councillor?

A Councillor is like a local leader. They are chosen by people in their area to speak for them. Councillors make important decisions about things that affect your daily life. This includes schools, parks, libraries, and local roads. They work to make their community a better place for everyone.

How Local Elections Work

Every few years, people in Inverurie and District vote to choose their Councillors. This is called a local election. When you turn 16, you can register to vote in Scottish local elections. Voting is how people choose who they want to represent them.

Sometimes, a Councillor might leave their job early. This could be if they get a new job, like becoming a Member of Parliament (MP). When this happens, a special election is held. This is called a by-election. It's a way to quickly choose a new Councillor for that area.

A Recent By-election

In 2017, a by-election happened in Inverurie and District. This was because Councillor Colin Clark became an MP. A new election was held on 12 October 2017 to choose someone new. Lesley Berry was elected as the new Councillor.
