Lviv opera Iolanta 2016 2
This is a part of the stage decoration for Lviv Opera's "Iolanta" show in 2016.

Iolanta (sometimes called Iolanthe) is a short, one-act opera. An opera is like a play where the story is told mostly through singing, with music played by an orchestra. The words for the opera, called the libretto, were written by Modest Tchaikovsky. He based the story on a Danish play called Kong Renés Datter (which means King René’s Daughter). This play was written by Henrik Hertz.

The story of Iolanta is about the life of a real person, Yolande de Bar. The original play was translated into Russian by Fyodor Miller and then changed a bit by Vladimir Zotov. The beautiful music for the opera was created by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, a very famous Russian composer. Iolanta was first performed in St. Petersburg, Russia, on December 18, 1892. It was shown at the Mariinsky Theatre on the same night as Tchaikovsky's famous ballet, The Nutcracker.

Understanding the Story of Iolanta

The opera Iolanta tells a fairy-tale-like story. It is about a young princess who has been kept hidden from the world. The main idea of the story is about seeing the world, both with your eyes and with your heart.

Who is Princess Iolanta?

Princess Iolanta is the daughter of King René. She has been blind since birth, but she does not know it. Her father, the King, has kept this a secret from her. He has made sure she lives in a beautiful, hidden garden. Everyone around her is told not to mention light or colors. They do this so she won't realize she is different. The King hopes to find a cure for her blindness.

The King's Secret Plan

King René loves his daughter very much. He believes that if Iolanta knows she is blind, she will be very sad. He has arranged for her to marry a young man named Robert. Robert is a duke who has been promised to Iolanta since they were children. The King hopes that a special doctor can help Iolanta see.

Meeting the Outside World

One day, two knights accidentally find the hidden garden. Their names are Vaudémont and Robert. Vaudémont is surprised by Iolanta's beauty. He quickly falls in love with her. Robert, however, admits that he is already in love with another woman named Matilda.

The Truth is Revealed

Vaudémont talks to Iolanta and realizes she cannot see. He tries to explain light and colors to her. This makes Iolanta confused and curious. The King and the doctor arrive. The doctor explains that Iolanta can only be cured if she truly wants to see. She must understand what she is missing.

Iolanta's Choice

The King is very upset that Iolanta now knows the truth. He fears she will be heartbroken. Vaudémont bravely tells the King that he loves Iolanta. He says he will marry her even if she remains blind. This strong declaration of love helps Iolanta. It makes her truly wish to see the world. This desire is the key to her cure.

The Happy Ending

Because Iolanta now deeply wants to see, the doctor's medicine works. Her sight is restored! Everyone celebrates this miracle. Robert is released from his promise to marry Iolanta. He is free to marry Matilda. Iolanta and Vaudémont can now be together. The opera ends with joy and praise for the power of love and light.

The Music of Iolanta

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's music for Iolanta is known for being very beautiful and gentle. It has many lovely melodies. The music helps tell the story and shows the feelings of the characters.

Tchaikovsky's Style in Iolanta

Tchaikovsky used a lot of soft and flowing music in Iolanta. This helps create the peaceful and hidden world where Iolanta lives. As the story unfolds, the music becomes more dramatic. It shows Iolanta's journey from not knowing to understanding and finally seeing. The opera has beautiful songs for the singers, called arias. It also has lovely parts for the orchestra.

Why Iolanta is Special
