A Look Back: History of Iona Church
Iona Church was built to replace an older church made of wood. The people needed a bigger and stronger building.
Building the Church
The new church was designed by an architect named Nathaniel Wales. He created a beautiful stone building. Workers laid the first stone in 1871. The church was officially opened on January 7, 1872.
Growing and Expanding
Over time, more and more people joined the church. The building became too small for everyone. So, between 1882 and 1883, they added a new section. This new part became the main church area. The original church building then became a church hall, used for other activities.
What Happens There Now?
Today, Iona Church is still a busy place. It is used for special church services. People also go there to enjoy concerts. During the summer, when cruise ships visit Port Chalmers, the church is often open for visitors to see.
