Ione Belarra Urteaga (born on September 25, 1987) is a Spanish politician and psychologist. She was a minister in the Spanish government, in charge of social rights and future plans, from 2021 to 2023. She has also been the leader of her political party, Podemos, since June 2021.

Ione Belarra is a key member of Podemos's national council. She was first chosen to be a member of the Congress of Deputies (Spain's main parliament) in 2015. She represented the area of Navarre at first. Later, in 2023, she started representing the Madrid constituency.

Early Life and Education

Ione Belarra was born in Pamplona, a city in Navarre, Spain. She studied psychology and graduated in 2012 from the Autonomous University of Madrid. She also started a master's degree in education.

Before becoming a politician, she worked on research projects. These projects looked at topics like education, people moving to new countries, and human rights. She also spent time as an activist and volunteer. She helped groups like SOS Racisme and the Spanish Red Cross. She also supported campaigns to help people who were in difficult situations and to protect their human rights. One of her first campaigns was about helping immigrants.

Political Journey

Starting in Politics (2014–2019)

Ione Belarra joined the political party Podemos in 2014, the year it was founded. The next year, she became part of the party's national leadership team. There, she was in charge of human rights, citizenship, and diversity.

In the 2015 Spanish election, she led the Podemos list for the Navarre area. She was one of two Podemos members elected from that region. From July 2018, she took on important roles in parliament for Podemos. She helped lead the party's work in the parliament.

Being a Minister (2020–2023)

After the election in November 2019, Podemos joined the government with another party, the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). Ione Belarra became a Secretary of State, focusing on the "2030 Agenda." This role involved planning for Spain's future goals. She held this position from January 2020 to March 2021.

Then, in March 2021, she became the Minister of Social Rights and 2030 Agenda. This meant she was in charge of policies related to social welfare and long-term planning for the country.

In June 2021, Ione Belarra was chosen by members to be the Secretary General (leader) of Podemos. She received a large majority of the votes.

In 2022, Belarra helped introduce a new law about animal rights in Spain. This law aimed to stop the sale of pets in shops and change zoos into places that help wild animals recover. It also proposed stronger punishments for people who harm animals. However, the law did not include rules about bullfighting. Later, there was a disagreement when another party tried to change the law to exclude animals used in hunting. Despite this, the animal rights bill moved forward in parliament.

For the 2023 Spanish election, Belarra ran in the Madrid constituency. She was part of a new group of left-wing parties called Sumar. This group won several seats in the parliament.

In October 2023, Belarra spoke out about the conflict in the Gaza Strip. She called for international action to address the situation.

After Government (2023–Present)

In November 2023, a new Spanish government was formed. Ione Belarra and other members of Podemos were not part of this new government. After this, Podemos decided to separate from the Sumar group in parliament. Its five members of parliament then sat in a different group.

In July 2025, after some unrest in a town called Torre-Pacheco, Belarra made comments about the Spanish police. A police union then filed a complaint against her.
