The Iowa Building is an old and important building. You can find it in downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in the United States. It was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This means it's a special place that is worth protecting because of its history. Later, in 2015, it also became part of a larger historic area. This area is known as the Cedar Rapids Central Business District Commercial Historic District.
Building History
The Iowa Building is quite tall, reaching seven stories high. It stands about 102 feet (31 meters) above the ground. Construction on the building began in 1913. During this time, there was a serious accident. Sadly, seven construction workers lost their lives when the top two floors collapsed.
Even after the accident, the building was finished the next year, in 1914. For many years, it was home to a company called the Lyman Company. This company made and sold women's hats. In 1933, the building was bought by new owners. They then gave it the name we know today: the Iowa Building.
