Iraj Weeraratne, born on February 21, 1981, is a famous Sri Lankan rapper, music producer, and DJ. He is known as IRAJ to his fans. Iraj helped bring Sinhala and Tamil rap music to Sri Lanka. However, his career has also had some challenges, including discussions about his political views and claims of spreading wrong information.

Iraj's Music Journey

Iraj went to Royal College, Colombo for his schooling. When he was 16, he won an award for being the best keyboard player from Guildhall Music School. He also started a band called Zealots with his friends from school. One of his bandmates was Ranidu Lankage.

In 2009, Iraj created music for a Tamil movie called Vettaikaaran. Later, he faced some issues during a trip to Chennai related to this movie project.

In 2020, Iraj was chosen to be on the board of the National Youth Services Council. This decision was questioned by many people because they felt he did not have enough experience for the role. He left this position in 2021, saying he had other work to do.

Political Views and Public Reaction

Iraj Weeraratne has openly supported the Rajapaksa family, especially Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Namal Rajapaksa. During the 2022 Sri Lankan protests, he used social media to support the government. He also shared his opinions about the people protesting. This led to many people disagreeing with him. In May 2022, his home in Kirulapone was damaged by protestors.

Iraj has also been accused of being part of efforts to spread wrong information. In 2021, Facebook removed his page. This happened because of claims that he was sharing false news about COVID-19 test kits.

In March 2025, Iraj was asked to speak with Sri Lanka’s Cyber Crimes Division. This was about a video where he talked about requests for donations related to the Temple of the Tooth.
