Irenäus Eibl-Eibesfeldt (born June 15, 1928 – died June 2, 2018) was an Austrian scientist. He was an ethologist, which means he studied animal behavior. He is famous for applying this study to humans. He looked at how humans behave, just like scientists study animals.

A Life of Discovery

Irenäus Eibl-Eibesfeldt was born in Vienna, Austria. He studied zoology (the study of animals) at the University of Vienna. This was from 1945 to 1949.

Early Work and Research

In 1949, he started working with Konrad Lorenz. Lorenz was a very important scientist in the field of ethology. Eibl-Eibesfeldt worked at the Max Planck Institute for Behavioral Physiology. He stayed there from 1951 to 1969.

Later, in 1970, he became a professor. He taught zoology at the University of Munich. From 1975, he led a special department. This was the Department of Human Ethology in Andechs, Germany.

Studying Human Behavior

Eibl-Eibesfeldt helped start a group called the International Society for Human Ethology. He was also its first president. From 1992, he was an honorary director. This was for the Ludwig-Boltzmann-Institute for Urban Ethology in Vienna.

For his first 20 years, he studied animal behavior. He looked at how mammals behave and how different animals communicate. He wrote many books about his findings. Two of his well-known books are Love and Hate: The Natural History of Behavior Patterns and Human Ethology.

Personal Life

Irenäus Eibl-Eibesfeldt married Eleonore Eibl-Eibesfeldt in 1950. They had two children, named Bernolf and Roswitha.

He passed away on June 2, 2018, in Starnberg, Germany. This was just before his 90th birthday. For many years, he enjoyed diving with Hans Hass. They explored the ocean together on Hass's diving boat, the Xarifa.
