About Irene Bache

Early Life and Art School

Irene Bache was born in Brockley, a part of south London. She was the oldest of four children. Her father, Charles Bache, worked in insurance, and both her parents, Charles and Emily, enjoyed painting as a hobby.

In 1904, her family moved to Reigate. Irene then went on to study art at several schools. These included the Croydon School of Art, the Central School of Arts and Crafts, and the Camberwell School of Art.

A Passion for Teaching Art

After finishing her studies, Irene Bache started teaching art. She taught in schools in different towns like Croydon, Peterborough, Worthing, and Whitchurch. For a short time, she also taught at the famous Royal College of Art.

In 1942, Irene Bache became the head of the Arts and Crafts department at Swansea College of Education. She stayed in this important role until she retired in 1966. She had new ideas about teaching art. She believed students should be more involved in their learning. While teaching, she also continued to create her own art.

Showing Her Art

Irene Bache showed her artwork in many group exhibitions in places like Swansea and Cardiff. She was very active in the Swansea Art Society. She even served as both its Chair and Vice-President at different times.

In 1954, she had her own special art show, called a solo exhibition, at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery in Swansea. When she retired in 1966, the College of Education held a special exhibition of her work to celebrate her career. This kind of show, looking back at an artist's work, is called a retrospective.

Life After Retirement

After retiring from teaching, Irene Bache opened her own art studio. She kept teaching art and painting. She especially loved painting landscapes (pictures of nature) and botanical subjects (pictures of plants and flowers).

She continued to show her art in group exhibitions. In 1974, her work was displayed at the National Eisteddfod of Wales, which is a big festival of Welsh culture. In 1981, she wrote and illustrated a book of poems called Gower Poems. These poems were inspired by the beautiful Gower Peninsula where she lived. She also drew pictures for a book about wild mushrooms in 1992.

To celebrate her ninetieth birthday, special solo exhibitions of her art were held. These shows took place at the Glynn Vivian Gallery and other places in Swansea.
