Iron City, sometimes spelled Ironcity, is a small, unincorporated community located in Calhoun County, Alabama, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's managed by the county government.
The Story of Iron City
Iron City got its name because of the iron ore that was found in the area. Iron ore is a type of rock from which we can get iron, a very useful metal. The community was an important stop along the Southern Railway route. This railway connected towns like Muscadine and the larger city of Birmingham.
A post office, which is where people send and receive mail, was opened in Ironcity in 1889. It served the community for many years. However, the post office eventually closed down in 1935.
Famous People from Iron City
Even though Iron City is a small community, some notable people have come from there:
- William B. Bowling was a politician who served as a U.S. Representative for Alabama. He worked in the United States Congress from 1920 to 1928, helping to make laws for the country.
- Lloyd Greer was an architect. Architects are people who design buildings.
