The Ironclad Hotel is a famous building in Marble Bar. This town is in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The hotel was built in the 1890s. It became well-known as the only hotel in what was once called the hottest town in Australia.

Marble Bar held the record for the hottest temperatures for many years. This record was not broken until new mining towns were built much later.

History of the Ironclad Hotel

The Ironclad Hotel was built using strong corrugated iron. This material helped it stand up to the hot weather.

How the Hotel Got its Name

It is believed that American miners gave the hotel its unique name. They thought the building looked like the ironclad ships from the United States. These were strong, armored ships.

During World War II, American servicemen were stationed near Marble Bar. This was because of the Corunna Downs Airfield.

Changes Over Time

The hotel's owners and managers changed many times over the years. For example, in 1901, the owners were Cooper and Blanton.

At different times, people raised concerns about the hotel's condition. Improvements were often needed to keep the building in good shape.

In 1949, a part of the hotel where people slept, called the residential section, burned down.

Protecting its Heritage

In 2006, the Ironclad Hotel was added to the Western Australian Register of Heritage Places. This means it is an important historical site. In 2011, a special plan was made to help protect and preserve the hotel for the future.
