The Isaac N. Reynolds House is a special old house located at 123 North East Street in Eaton Rapids, Michigan. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This means it is an important historical building. Many people think it is one of the best examples of a Gothic Revival style house in Michigan.

History of the Reynolds House

Isaac N. Reynolds was born in New York state in 1830. When he was six years old, his family moved to Eaton County in 1836. The Reynolds family was one of the first families to live in that area.

Isaac's father passed away in 1848. After that, Isaac bought the family farm. In 1865, he moved to Eaton Rapids. He bought a large piece of land there. This land now covers several city blocks.

In 1866, Isaac had this beautiful house built. A few years later, in 1870, he divided his land into smaller plots. He also planned out new streets and lots for other homes. Reynolds lived in this house until he passed away in 1916.

What the Reynolds House Looks Like

The Reynolds House is a Gothic Revival style cottage. It is made of wood and sits on a strong stone foundation. The outside walls have vertical siding, which means the wooden boards go up and down.

At the back of the house, there is a large section. This part was probably added later, in the early 1900s. The front of the house has a big, set-back gable. A gable is the triangular part of a wall under a sloping roof. This gable has fancy, decorated boards called verge boards.

A long porch, called a veranda, runs across the entire front of the house. This porch is held up by wooden columns. These columns are also very decorative and detailed.
