Isabel-Clara Simó i Monllor (born April 4, 1943 – died January 13, 2020) was an important Spanish writer and journalist. She wrote many books in the Catalan language, which is spoken in parts of Spain.

Isabel-Clara Simó won several awards for her writing, like the Premi Sant Jordi in 1993. She also worked as a journalist. She was the director of a magazine called Canigó and wrote a daily column for the newspaper Avui. She even worked for the Culture Department of the Generalitat de Catalunya, which is like the government of Catalonia.

A Writer's Life

Early Life and Education

Isabel-Clara Simó studied Philosophy and Journalism at the Universitat de València. She also earned a PhD in Romance Philology, which is the study of languages like Spanish and Catalan.

She worked as a teacher in different towns, including Bunyol and Figueres. Her children were born in Figueres. Later, she taught in Barcelona.

Becoming a Journalist

In 1972, Isabel-Clara Simó started her career in journalism. She became the director of a weekly magazine called Canigó. She also wrote regularly for many other newspapers and magazines.

As a journalist, she wrote many articles for the newspaper Avui. Later, she wrote for El Punt Avui.

Her Books and Characters

Isabel-Clara Simó was known for creating interesting and sometimes complicated characters in her stories. These characters often had difficult relationships. Some of her famous works include La Nati (1991), Raquel (1992), and Històries perverses (1992).

Many of her stories, like Júlia (1983) and D'Alcoi a Nova York (1987), were set in Alcoi. This was the town where she was born.

Awards and Recognition

Isabel-Clara Simó received many important awards for her writing.

  • In 1993, she won the prestigious Sant Jordi prize for her novel La salvatge.
  • She also received the Creu de Sant Jordi in 1999. This award recognized her entire career.
  • In 2001, she won the Andròmina prize for her book Hum... Rita!: L'home que ensumava dones.
  • She received the Crítica dels Escriptors Valencians prize in 2004 for her essays in En legítima defensa.
  • In 2007, she won the Premi de Novel·la Ciutat d'Alzira for her book El meu germà Pol.
  • In 2009, she was given the Trajectòria prize at the Setmana del Llibre en Català. This award celebrated her huge amount of work and her efforts to protect the Catalan language.
  • The city of Alcoi honored her in 2013 with its Golden Medal and the Key to the City.
  • In 2017, she received the highest honor in Catalan literature, the Premi d'Honor de les Lletres Catalanes.

Other Works

Isabel-Clara Simó's collection of stories called Dones (1997) was even made into a movie in 2000. She also wrote a successful play called Còmplices, which was performed on stage.
