Isabel May Tweddle (1875–1945) was an important Australian painter. She was known for being part of several art groups in Melbourne, including the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors.

About Isabel May Tweddle

Isabel May Tweddle was born Isabel May Hunter on November 26, 1875, in New South Wales, Australia. From 1894 to 1897, she studied art at the National Gallery School in Melbourne. During her studies, she met another artist named Ada May Plante.

After finishing her studies, Isabel began showing her artwork at the Victorian Artists Society. In 1904, she married Joseph Thornton Tweddle, who was a businessman and helped many good causes. The couple traveled a lot, visiting places like Europe, Scandinavia, and islands in the Pacific Ocean. Isabel showed the paintings she made during these trips in London.

Isabel was very interested in Post-Impressionist art. This style uses bright colors and visible brushstrokes to show feelings rather than just realistic scenes. She was especially inspired by the work of artists Arnold Shore and William Frater. It is believed that Isabel also influenced other artists like Sybil Craig, Peggie Crombie, and Jessie Mackintosh.

She was a member of many art groups in Melbourne. These included the Contemporary Art Group, the Contemporary Art Society, the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors, and the Women's Art Club.

Isabel's paintings are now kept in important art collections. You can find her work at the Shepparton Art Museum, the National Gallery of Victoria, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Isabel May Tweddle passed away on July 9, 1945, in Melbourne. A place called Tweddle Place in the Canberra suburb of Chisholm is named in her honor.
