National Gallery of Victoria facts for kids
The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is a famous art gallery in Melbourne, Australia. It started in 1861, making it the oldest and largest public art gallery in Australia. The NGV has two main locations: NGV International on St Kilda Road and The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia at Federation Square.
The St Kilda Road building, designed by Sir Roy Grounds, first opened in 1968. Later, in 2003, the NGV International building was redesigned by Mario Bellini. The Ian Potter Centre at Federation Square was designed by LAB Architecture Studio.
When the gallery first opened, Victoria was a rich and growing colony. After the Victorian gold rush, Melbourne was Australia's largest city. Kind gifts from wealthy people, like the businessman Alfred Felton, helped the National Gallery buy many artworks from around the world. Today, the NGV has over 65,000 pieces of art!
Learning Art at the NGV
The National Gallery of Victoria Art School began in 1867. It was the most important place for art training in Australia until about 1910. Many artists who studied there, such as Sidney Nolan, became very famous in Australia.
