The Victorian Heritage Register is a special list of important places and objects in Victoria, Australia. These places are considered part of Victoria's cultural heritage. This means they are important parts of history, art, or traditions that should be kept safe for future generations.

The Register has legal power because of a law called the Heritage Act 1995. This law helps protect the listed items. Heritage Victoria is the government group in charge of this list. They work to protect many different kinds of heritage, including:

  • Old places where people lived or worked long ago, and objects found there.
  • Historic buildings, structures, and areas.
  • Gardens, trees, and cemeteries that have special meaning.
  • Landscapes that show how people lived or used the land in the past.
  • Old shipwrecks and other items found underwater.
  • Important objects and collections of items.

Heritage Victoria is part of the Department of Planning and Community Development, which is a department of the Government of Victoria. Heritage Victoria reports to the Heritage Council. This council makes the final decisions about what places and items should be added to the Register. The Minister for Planning is the government leader responsible for Heritage Victoria and the Heritage Act 1995.

Protecting Victoria's Special Places

The Victorian Heritage Register lists important buildings and other places across Victoria. Being on this list gives them legal protection. This means it is against the law to destroy or change these listed sites without permission. It is very difficult to remove something from the list; only a government minister can do it.

Recognizing Heritage Sites

All places and objects that are officially listed on the Victorian Heritage Register are allowed to have a special blue sign. This sign helps people know that the place is important and protected.
