About Isabel Pardo de Vera
Isabel Pardo de Vera was born in Lugo, a city in Galicia, Spain. Her father, Gerardo Pardo de Vera, was the first mayor of Becerreá to be chosen by the people through voting. Her sister, Ana, became a journalist, someone who writes news stories.
Isabel's Education Journey
Isabel Pardo de Vera finished her studies in engineering in July 2001. She studied road, canal, and port engineering at the University of A Coruña. Later, she continued her learning. In 2007, she completed an MBA, which is a special business degree, from the Instituto de Educación Superior Intercontinental de la Empresa. She also graduated from ESADE Business School in 2009.
Her Career in Transport
Isabel Pardo de Vera started working in 2007 for Administrador de Infraestructuras Ferroviarias (ADIF). This is the company that manages Spain's railway tracks and stations. She worked on important projects, including the management of the high-speed train line between Madrid and Galicia.
In 2015, she took a break from ADIF. She worked as the Director of Mobility and Infrastructure for the local government of Province of Pontevedra. She returned to ADIF in 2016.
Leading ADIF and Government Role
In June 2018, Isabel Pardo de Vera became the first woman to be the president of ADIF. This was a big step for her career and for women in engineering.
In July 2021, she was chosen for another important role. She became the Secretary of State for Infrastructure, Transport and Housing. This meant she was a high-ranking official in the Spanish government, helping to make decisions about how people travel and where they live.
Changes in Leadership
Isabel Pardo de Vera left her government role on February 20, 2023. The president of Renfe, another state railway company, also resigned. This happened after an issue with new trains ordered for the northern regions of Asturias and Cantabria.
There was an error in the design of these trains. They were ordered with dimensions that were too wide for some of the tunnels in those areas. Even though these trains were not actually built with the wrong size, the mistake meant that the project would be delayed. The trains were expected to be ready by 2024, but the new estimated completion date became at least 2026.
Awards and Recognition
Isabel Pardo de Vera has received several awards for her work:
- Monforte Railway Award (2018)
- Gold Medal of the City of Vigo (2022)
