Isabel's Early Life
There are different ideas about where Isabel Prieto de Landázuri was born. Most people believe she was born in Alcázar de San Juan, Spain, in 1833. However, some writers think she was born in Mexico City. Other sources even say she was born earlier, in 1828.
Isabel was the oldest of eleven children. Her father, Sotero Prieto Olasagarre, was from Panama. Her mother, Isabel González Bango de la Puebla, was from Spain.
Moving to Mexico
When Isabel was four years old, her family moved to Mexico. There, she spent her time studying and learning many languages. She became very good at translating important books and plays from one language to another.
Later, she moved to Guadalajara, a city in Mexico. This is where she wrote most of her own plays and poems. She also worked with a French writer named Alfredo Bablot on a newspaper called El Federalista.
Life Changes and Marriage
In 1864, because of a conflict called the French Intervention in Mexico, Isabel moved to San Francisco, California. A year later, in 1865, she returned to Mexico.
She married her cousin, Pedro Landázuri Diez, who was an important politician at the time. They moved to the Tacubaya neighborhood in Mexico City.
How She Wrote
Isabel had an amazing memory. She could think up and plan her poems and plays in her head without writing anything down. Then, she would tell them to her husband, who would write them for her. Even her long works were like true improvisations, meaning she made them up on the spot!
Her Famous Works
Isabel wrote a total of fourteen plays. Some of her most well-known works include:
- Las dos flores (The Two Flowers)
- Los dos son peores (Both Are Worse)
- Oro y oropel (Gold and Tinsel)
- La escuela de las cuñadas (The School of Sisters-in-Law)
- Duende y serafín (Goblin and Seraph)
- Abnegación (Self-Sacrifice)
- El Ángel del hogar (The Angel of the Home)
- Una noche de Carnaval (A Carnival Night)
- Soñar despierto (Daydreaming)
- Un lirio entre zarzas (A Lily Among Thorns)
Later Life and Legacy
In 1874, Isabel's husband became a consul for Mexico in Hamburg, Germany. A consul is like a representative for their country in another country. So, Isabel moved with him and their son, Jorge, to Germany. Sadly, their daughter Blanca got sick and passed away in Mexico before they could leave. Their third child was born in Germany in 1875.
Isabel passed away in 1876 from a cerebral infarction (a type of stroke).
Years later, in 1882, a speech about Isabel's life and writings was given to the Mexican Academy. Her poems were also collected and published by Ireneo Paz.
