The Isabel and Chester Greenwood House is a special old house in Farmington, Maine. It was built in 1896. This house is famous for its beautiful Queen Anne design. It was also the home of Chester Greenwood. He was the clever person who invented earmuffs! The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This means it is an important historical building.

A Unique Home

The Greenwood House is a large, two-and-a-half-story building made of wood. It sits on a pretty, wooded hill. You can find it between Maine State Route 27 and the Sandy River. The house looks a bit uneven, which is common for Queen Anne style homes.

Special Design Features

The most eye-catching part is a three-story, eight-sided tower. It has a pointy roof that looks like a bell. The tower has square windows on its lower floors. The top floor has rounded windows. You can see similar rounded windows in a large gable on the roof. A porch wraps around one side of the house. It has pretty turned posts holding it up. The house also has fancy wooden decorations. You can see them under the main roof and on the front gable. Inside, the house has beautiful woodwork too.

Chester Greenwood: The Earmuff Inventor

Chester Greenwood (1858-1937) is very famous in Farmington. He is known for inventing earmuffs. These earmuffs were made in a local factory. They were then sent to cold places all over North America. Chester invented earmuffs when he was only 15 years old! He got a patent for his invention in 1877.
