Isabel de Cisneros (born around 1666, died about 1714) was a talented female painter from the city of Quito, which is now in Ecuador. She was born during the time when Quito was a Spanish colony. Her father, Miguel de Santiago, was one of the most famous painters of the Quito School, a special style of art from that region. Even though she is often called Isabel de Santiago, she used her mother's family name, Cisneros, to identify herself.

Isabel's Early Life and Training

Isabel de Cisneros was born in 1666. Her father, Miguel de Santiago, was a mestizo (meaning he had mixed European and Indigenous ancestry). Her mother, Andrea Cisneros y Alvarado, was Spanish.

Isabel learned to paint and worked in her father's art studio. This was a common way for artists to learn their skills back then. She later married Captain Antonio Egas, and they had five children together.

Isabel was the only one of her father's children who lived longer than him. She became very important in her father's studio. This happened after another talented student, Nicolás Goíbar, left the workshop.

Isabel's Artistic Works

Juana de Jesus

Isabel de Cisneros was known for her oil paintings. She often painted scenes of the Virgin as a child and the baby Jesus. These paintings were usually decorated with flowers and animals.

It is thought that she might have worked with her father on a series of paintings called Milagros de La virgen (Miracles of the Virgin). This was between 1699 and 1706, while she was still in his studio.

One of her most famous works is a portrait of a woman named Juana de Jesus. Isabel painted this portrait after Juana de Jesus had passed away. A writer from that time, Francisco Javier Antonio, praised the painting. He said it looked very much like Juana de Jesus. He believed this was because Isabel had met Juana de Jesus many times.

Sadly, the original portrait of Juana de Jesus by Isabel de Cisneros no longer exists. However, there is a copy of it at the Convent of Santa Clara in Quito. This copy shows Juana looking "incredibly Quiteña," which means she looks very much like someone from Quito. She has a long nose, a gentle smile, a narrow face, and delicate hands.
